Head Students and Prefects
Applicants, both internal and external, undergo a rigorous selection process which includes an interview with the Headteacher and staff body at the start of the school year. They are required to undertake numerous public and community-related activities as well as collaborate with prefects and the lower years.
Prefects apply via an application form in Year 10. They are selected in January and continue their role through to Year 11. They have a range of duties to fulfil, including lunch supervision, assisting teachers and other school staff with administrative tasks and supporting the lower years of secondary school.
Here is a sample list of activities that the Head Students are required to undertake:
- Leading School/ Year Council meetings
- Running of focus or discussion groups with students to address specific issues, summarising the outcomes and presentation of these outcomes to the Headteacher or Leadership Group.
- Finding out about and representing the views of the sixth form, KS4 and KS3
- Showing prospective students around the school site at open evenings to promote the school and address audiences
- Speaking at public events (including Awards Evening and Assemblies)
- Liaising with specific members of staff such as the Assistant Headteacher, the Head of Sixth Form, Vocational Co-ordinator, Year Co-ordinators, senior members of staff and the Student Responsibilities Co-ordinator
- Attendance at governing body meetings to give updates on the views of students
- Representing the school to the wider community
- Participation in mentoring schemes for Prefects and younger students
- Maintaining a visible presence around the school and play a role in maintaining good order.
- Giving tours and general public relations work with visitors to the school.
- Occasional attendance at governing body meetings to give updates on the views of the students.
